Jean-Pierre on Trump's White House construction: 'Corruption at its core'

Former White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Tuesday decried the Trump administration’s new ballroom construction project, which is being funded by private donors

“So The People’s House is basically being sold to the highest bidder. It is corruption at its core,” Jean-Pierre said during an appearance on ABC’s “The View.”

She later added, “There’s no greater metaphor right now than what’s happening right now in this country than watching Donald Trump take a wrecking ball to the White House.”

The Trump administration’s $250 million project has been soliciting private investors with the promise of “recognition associated with the White House Ballroom.”

A wide range of tech companies — including Google, Amazon and Meta — were invited to make initial commitments to the project’s success. The president has also made a pledge to invest his own money into the project.

“We’re putting up our own money, you probably hear the beautiful sound of construction to the back, that’s music to my ears, when I hear that sound it reminds me of money, in this case it reminds me of lack of money because I’m paying for it,” Trump said while speaking to Republican senators at the White House on Tuesday.

Site demolition for the project started Monday on part of the East Wing, going against previous statements from White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, who had in July said “nothing will be torn down.”

The White House on Tuesday dismissed criticism of the demolition as “manufactured outrage.”

Still, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the project is “destroying” The People’s House.

Jean-Pierre, who was on the receiving end of the Democratic Party’s ire earlier this year after she announced that she’d become an independent ahead of a book release, slammed officials for not holding Trump accountable for his massive overhauls. Jean-Pierre’s book, “Independent,” was released on Tuesday.

“The powers that are in the D.C. are not standing up. They’re acting as if they’re powerless, which is part of the book, Independence,” Jean-Pierre told viewers on ABC.

“Like, no, you all have power. You all have power. Do something with it.”
