Live updates: Democrats block GOP bill to end shutdown; Letitia James faces federal indictment

The Senate on Thursday for a seventh time failed to reopen the government as the shutdown extends into its ninth day.

With no resolution in sight, Democrats are feeling like they have the upper hand — at least for now.

The Justice Department’s Eastern District of Virginia announced a federal grand jury has brought an indictment against New York Attorney General Letitia James, following an investigation into allegations of mortgage fraud, according to The Associated Press, which cited an anonymous source.

Meanwhile, President Trump hosted a Cabinet meeting where he touted the newly brokered first phase of a peace deal between Israel and Hamas. Both are expected to approve the ceasefire on Thursday.

He said hostages held in Gaza will likely be released Monday or Tuesday. The president is also slated to travel to Egypt over the weekend to officially sign the ceasefire deal.

He then met with Finnish President Alexander Stubb at the White House.

In Illinois and Oregon, lawsuits from both states against the Trump administration over National Guard deployments will be heard in two federal courts Thursday.

And Thursday evening in Virginia, gubernatorial candidates Abigail Spanberger (D) and Winsome Earle-Sears (R) will debate in the shadow of a texting scandal engulfing the Democratic attorney general candidate Jay Jones. The event is hosted by WAVY 10, an affiliate of Nexstar, the Hill’s parent company.
