Live updates: Virginia AG candidate debate spotlights text scandal; first NYC mayoral debate

Two pivotal debates on the 2025 campaign trail are set to kick off Thursday evening in Virginia and New York.

First up is the Virginia attorney general debate at 6 p.m. EDT between Democrat Jay Jones and Republican incumbent Jason Miyares. All eyes will focus on how Jones responds to the likely first question about his controversial text messages that have roiled the race.

New York City mayoral candidates Zohran Mamdani (D), Curtis Sliwa (R) and Andrew Cuomo (I) will meet for the first of two general election debates in the race to succeed Mayor Eric Adams at 7p.m. Mamdani, a democratic socialist, has built a strong lead in polling despite Cuomo’s name recognition in the state.

Just before the first debate was set to start, John Bolton, a vocal critic of President Trump, was indicted by a federal grand jury. He is charged with eight counts of transmission of national defense information (NDI) and 10 counts of the unlawful retention of NDI, the Justice Department announced.

Earlier on Thursday, Senate Democrats voted to block the annual $852 billion defense appropriations bill as divisions deepen on Day 16 of the government shutdown.

The upper chamber this morning also once again failed to reopen the government in a 51-45 vote.

Meanwhile, Trump announced on Thursday that he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the coming weeks. In the Oval Office earlier this afternoon, Trump also revealed new actions for expanding access to in vitro fertilization, or IVF.
