White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller on Monday slammed Curtis Sliwa, the Republican nominee for mayor in New York City — noting that backing him instead of former Gov. Andrew Cuomo amounts to “throwing your vote away.”
The two candidates are trailing behind Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani, according to recent polling from Emerson College Polling/PIX11/The Hill.
“As far as New York is concerned, as you talked about, as we’ve said, unfortunately, the anti-Mamdani vote is being split between Cuomo and Sliwa,” Miller said during a Monday night appearance on Fox News’s “Hannity.”
“And President Trump tonight put out a statement being clear that if you vote for Sliwa, who’s polling at about a third of where Cuomo is, you’re just throwing your vote away,” he added. “The anti-Mamdani vote, which is really the pro-New York City vote, the pro-America vote, needs to unite behind the leading candidate, and that’s Andrew Cuomo.”
President Trump endorsed Cuomo earlier on Monday and slammed Mamdani, a State Assembly member and democratic socialist who has gained traction among progressive voters due at least in part to his campaign promises to introduce citywide rent freezes and free child care.
“It is my obligation to run the Nation, and it is my strong conviction that New York City will be a Complete and Total Economic and Social Disaster should Mamdani win,” Trump wrote in a Monday Truth Social post. “His principles have been tested for over a thousand years, and never once have they been successful.”
“I would much rather see a Democrat, who has had a Record of Success, WIN, than a Communist with no experience and a Record of COMPLETE AND TOTAL FAILURE,” Trump added.
Weeks before Election Day, incumbent New York City Mayor Eric Adams dropped out of the race and also endorsed Cuomo, while Sliwa has refused to step aside despite pressure from GOP leaders.
Sliwa’s campaign team did not immediately respond to The Hill’s request for comment regarding Miller’s statements.
