President Trump said Sunday he would “certainly imagine” the Department of Justice (DOJ) is investigating former FBI Director Christopher Wray.
“I would imagine. I would certainly imagine. I would think they are doing that,” Trump told NBC News in a phone interview when asked if the DOJ should investigate Wray, adding the former law enforcement official “did a terrible job and we just found out about it.”
“I think it’s very inappropriate what he, what he did. And, I think a lot of his service was very inappropriate. But, we haven’t gone beyond that,” Trump said.
The president’s comments come days after a federal prosecutor picked by Trump brought a case against former FBI Director James Comey, accusing him of authorizing an anonymous leak to the press about an FBI investigation.
Comey, a former Republican appointed by President Obama whom Trump fired in his first term, has been charged with one count of providing a false statement to Congress and another count of obstructing a congressional proceeding.
The former FBI director has said he is innocent and looks forward to a trial. Comey is set to be arraigned on Oct. 9 in federal court in Alexandria, Va.
Trump has long clashed with both Comey and Wray, and appeared set on firing Wray as well before the then-FBI director preemptively resigned at the end of the Biden administration, shortly before Trump returned to office. Trump had nominated Wray to replace Comey following his firing, but has voiced regret over the pick.
Celebrating Wray’s resignation as “a great day for America,” Trump had bashed the former FBI director over the bureau’s search of his Mar-a-Lago estate in 2022 amid a probe into his handling of classifed materials after leaving office.
Trump posted over the weekend attacking the former FBI chief and asserting he “has some major explaining to do” following a report by The Blaze that stated, without making clear their mission, that federal agents were in the crowd during the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot.
FBI Director Kash Patel told Fox News Digital on Saturday that agents “were sent into a crowd control mission after the riot was declared by Metro Police” while continuing to criticize the move as going “against FBI standards.”
He also alleged “corrupt leadership” had “lied to Congress and to the American people about what really happened.”
Trump claimed on Truth Social earlier Saturday that FBI agents were “probably acting as Agitators and Insurrectionists, but certainly not as ‘Law Enforcement Officials.’ ”
“That’s two in a row, Comey and Wray, who got caught LYING, with our Great Country at stake,” Trump asserted. “WE CAN NEVER LET THIS HAPPEN TO AMERICA AGAIN!”
NBC noted that Wray has not publicly commented on the allegations.
Vice President Vance in an interview on “Fox News Sunday” said Comey “will have his day in court” while predicting charges will be brought against other figures.
“There’s certainly going to be more indictments coming over the next three and a half years of the Trump administration,” he said.
